Atmospheric Perspective
  In painting, a techinique of creating a sense of depth by gradually fading the colors as objects move into the distance.
Book of Hours
  A religious book used in private devotions
Bookplate
  A small picture or text that identifies current or previous ownership of the book
Breviary
  A book, often illuminated, that contains the texts necessary for the celebration of the divine office
Burnishing
  Enhancing the smoothness and shininess of a surface by polishing with a smooth hard stone
Crayon
  A stick of white or colored solidified pigment or chalk
Divine Office
  The daily devotions and prayers of the canonical hours performed by the clergy
Gilding
  The application of gold or silver to a surface
Historiated Initial
  An initial that depicts an identifiable scene or figures
Illumination
  The embellishment of a manuscript with luminous colors, esp. gold and silver
Image Cycle
  A series of images in a manuscript that pertain to the same subject. Cycles often contain images depicting various scenes of an individual's life, usually in chronological order
Initial
  An enlarged or decorated letter introducing an important sections of a text
Line Filler
  A decorative device that fills the remainder or the line not occupied by script
Liturgy
  The rites, observances, and procedures prescribed for public worship
Manuscript
  A book written by hand
Marginalia
  From Latin, meaning "things in the margin"
Miniature
  An independent illustration, as opposed to an initial
Missal
  A text containing the prayers, chants, and readings necessary for performing mass
Parchment
  Animal skin prepared to recieve writing, esp. that of a sheep or goat
Provenance
  The history of a book's ownership
Rubric
  A title, chapter heading, or instruction that is separate from the text and often written in red ink
Rulings
  The process by which frames or horizontal lines are produced
Scribe
  The person who physically writes the book or document
Script
  The handwriting used in manuscripts
Scriptorium
  A writing room, especially in a church or monastary, where books are made
Tempera
  A type of paint made by mixing pigments with a base of egg yolk
Vellum
  Writing material made from calf skin
